For the take action portion of our group’s capstone project I believe that we actively worked to positively impact our community through teaching students about an important aspect of the gardening process, the water cycle. I helped with the lesson plan by creating the different materials that we used for our water cycle activity, like the four different posters.
Overall, I think our take action project was pretty successful because we were able to share our ideas about our issue firsthand with members of our community through teaching a class. Also, by teaching a group of the younger generation about the importance of garden processes, we are hopefully positively influencing the future of gardening in schools. Our original goal was to further develop children’s social and intellectual abilities, as well as environmental awareness, through gardening and interactions with nature. I believe that we achieved this goal by teaching the students about how the environment reacts with their garden.
One part of the take action that we could've improved on was our communication choices. Even though, we did a great job at communicating our ideas to the students, we didn’t do as good of a job at reaching out to other members of our community. Due to this, we made a relatively small impact on our community as a whole. Throughout our project we made a few changes in order to execute the project in the most effective way. For example, we changed our lesson plan to relate to what the students were learning in class and we narrowed the focus of our plan to only teaching a gardening class to increase the impact of our overall project.
From this experience, I learned the importance of professionalism and preparation. I learned the importance of being professional through our communication with the fourth grade teacher and the green classroom leader. I was reminded that we weren’t dealing with fellow high schoolers, we were working with experienced adults, so we had to act mature and competent. I also learned the importance of preparation before hand. By preparing the activity before the class I felt ready to teach the class. Professionalism and preparation are two essential components in adult life, so I can definitely use what I learned from this project in my future career and life in general.
If I could do this project over again I would probably add a donation drive for gardening supplies to donate to the Green Corn Project which would make our impact even larger by helping out local organizations with their gardens. Also, If we had more time to execute this project we could've added a marketing element to our take action by spreading our ideas through the AGS newsletter and social media. By using a marketing strategy we would inform even more people about our issue and hopefully expand our project’s impact.
Overall, I am proud of the work that I put into this project and what our group accomplished as a whole. Over the past semester I have learned that making a difference on an issue is not only possible but it can also be very rewarding. Now I know that if I put in a lot of work and plan ahead, I have the ability to impact issues that are important to me.
