I truly think that this project was successful. I originally was not thrilled about this project because it was not in any way something that I was passion about. As we continued to work throughout the semester, I quickly became very interested in the topic of gardening at elementary schools. We were able to work with Becker Elementary, an elementary school that is very close to Austin High. Becker Elementary already has an incredible garden program called the Green Garden that is located directly across from their campus. Working with the Green Garden program was amazing because we could focus on teaching the class in connection with their curriculum and already had the resources, space, and allotted time to do so.
For the take action portion of our project, all four of us represented a stage of the water cycle for the main activity. After this we broke the class in half and took half to their class’ garden plot and we talked about how the water cycle pertained to their immediate watering of the plot. We originally thought that we had less time in the garden than we actually did so, I came up with the second portion of the lesson while we were there. So while Sydney was with the half of the group that was writing there, I was at the garden plot and Luis was assisting with both groups and Des was taking pictures.
Through this project, I believe that we were successful in bring local changes. Even though we were working and volunteering in a pre-existing garden program, I think that because we were high schoolers and new volunteers, we were able to show to the students that we care about the aspect of gardening in elementary schools. I also believe that take action portion of the project went very well. We were able to keep the students under control for the most part and were able to convey our message/ lesson through engaging activities. One small issue that we can across was that we had never met the students prior to teaching the lesson, therefore we were unable to address the students by name.
Throughout the course of the semester, I felt as if we never really had any difficulties that came along with communication. All four of us had the same ultimate goal of doing something with gardening at the elementary level therefore we all knew we had to work hard and communicate efficiently to be successful. Communication was very important with the groups and people that we were working with outside of our group and there were a few instances when it was difficult to contact these groups.
From completing this project, I learned vital information about working and learning at upper levels. I taught me to work at my own pace but also fit it into a time alloted. Much of college is said to be based on your own persistence and dedication to the assignment and I feel that this has been a crucial experience in preparing me for these types of things in the future.
