I believe the take action portion of our capstone project was a success. Despite some the minor setbacks we were confronted with, our group was able to overcome them and fulfill our goal. Our original plan had been to give kids the opportunity to garden at schools who otherwise could not. Due to the time constraints we faced along with some other difficulties that we were forced to deal with, we began to think of different ways in which we’d be able to carry out our take action plan. Providing children with the opportunity to garden at schools which did not have the resources to do so was a more difficult task than we had previously thought. We decided to scratch our original idea and come up with a new one, but we still wanted our take action plan to have something to do with gardening.
We found a volunteering opportunity at a school in South Austin in which we’d be able to interact with kids in a gardening environment by teaching a class. We decided it would be a great way to carry out our take action plan, so we began think of things we’d be able to teach. Our lesson plan was about the water cycle and we would have the kids play a game in which they cycled through all of the stations labeled with the different stages such as precipitation, evaporation etc… Getting all of the kids to pay attention was a more difficult task than we had anticipated. The game lasted shorter than we had originally planned so we had to improvise for the second half of the class. Luckily our group was able to communicate very clearly and we managed to get through our lesson plan. If we were given the opportunity to do it over again I would have re designed the lesson plan to make it longer and more interactive. From this project I learned that working with kids wasn’t as easy as I had previously thought, but all in all it was a positive experience which I would be happy to do over again.
