Teaching a class at Becker's Green Classroom was a great experience for me. I was so happy that we were able to take action on the importance of implementation of garden programs in elementary schools, as this is an issue that's very important to me. I grew up being able to experiment with gardening, and felt the fundamentals of my education and values surrounding the environment were inspired by that experience that I was able to have. I was so happy to be able to help the garden program at Becker, because they're doing amazing work there. During our lesson we were able to teach the kids not only about the water cycle, but directly how it effects the plants they're taking care of and their gardens. It was incredible to be able to help with their program, and interact directly with the kids, and make an impact on their education. I think the biggest thing we struggled with was being able to find a good way to make an important impact - for a little while we had trouble figuring how much we were able to do in this area. We played with the idea of building an entire garden bed for a group, or working with The Boys and Girls Club to plant things around their campus, but these ideas didn't really work out. We wanted to make as big an impact as possible, but we realized some things were out of our reach.
Once we found Becker, we were really happy to be able to help such an incredible program. The only issue we had while teching the class was classroom control - it was a little difficult to make the class of fourth graders pay attention and participate how we wanted them to for an entire hour. I think we learned a lot about how to get the attention of the kids and be effective in teaching. They seemed to really enjoy the lesson and appreciate the opportunity to be able to learn in the garden.
